Visit to the Capelton mine

The Capelton mine is about 15 min by car from the main campus of the Université de Sherbrooke. The mine was opened in 1863 for the extraction of cupper and was closed in 1907. Thanks to the Vallières-Langlois family the mine was re-open in 1995 and since then has become a popular touristic attraction in the region. Because I don’t know much of the eastern townships region, one of my students, Marc-André Lecours, suggested visiting this mine. I loved the idea, since it was a scientific adventure as well! I think everybody had fun and we all kept a nice souvenir: a chalcopyrite (CuFeSO2) rock!
